With more power comes worse gas mileage.

I suggest if you want good mileage, look for that and bike space over anything else. After all, your car will likely just be a faster mode of transportation.

Subaru Impreza - yeah, good cars but the older ones are shit unless they were properly maintained their entire life.

If all you wanna do is customize the car and not do anything with the motor, then look into the Honda Civics (EF/EG/EK) because you can have one of those for cheaper than any car that's on your list and they're far more dependable then all 3 cars combined. I'm, of course, partial to Civics just because of the wide variety of parts they have and the fact you can make a 300whp Civic for less than $4000 including the cost of the car. It may be FWD but they're dependable and since it's meant to be your first car you can leave it stock and then upgrade over time.

if it's a V8 then it can be made fast for cheap but they're junk, they fall apart and leave you stranded more than it runs. EF's can look good for cheap, same with EG/EK's but the older EF's will cost more to maintain since they're so damn old.

the D16Y8 is a decent sohc, you can make them pretty quick for cheap. You wanna stay away from body kits, especially gay ones like the one the CRX has. The riced headlights and taillights would have to go too...but it's a good base and if you could get him to about $1500 then get it because you can take the $500 you saved and get an OEM front/rear bumper and side skirts.

that crx looks like every stolen salvaged title honda running around... with that being said, i would do what the dude above me said and get the oem trim back.

Just get a decent condition stock civic.. not some riced out piece of shit. If you get a civic and decide to mod it, dont make it a riced out piece of shit. Nothing better than oem parts. And saying a zx3 is fast is like saying grizzly adams didnt have a beard.
