Building some new wheels myself. First time. I can true them in, and I have brought them in round and adjusted/fixed dished wheels before. So this I'm hoping will go smoothly. Profile minis swells, colony jet fuel spokes, blue nips, and chrome gsports. Photo

Just take your time and it should all go just fine. A little attention to detail will go a very long way. I think it's one of the most enjoyable parts of bike maintenance.

Here's a few tips:
Don't forget the radial true; it's something I see a lot of first-timers forget to do.

Read up a little on prestressing wheels if you want them to last a long time(also known as destressing and by a number of other names).

There's no need to get them perfectly true on the initial build; even when prestressed, they can come out of true a bit in the first week or so. Just get it close enough for your liking and then do the final true after a few days of riding(or do it both times, if you're a bit OCD about that type of thing).

For the rear wheel, lace the inward spokes on the non-driveside flange first, then the inward ones on the driveside, then the non-driveside outward ones and finally the driveside outward ones. For the front wheel; inwards first, outwards last. This order will make everything go together much easier and you won't have to piss about with bending spokes every which way. You shouldn't really have to bend any if you do it in this order.

Good luck! smile

I used to always forget to check the dishing frequently. Like every time I tighten or loosen a group of spokes I check it now

I don't know how I neglected to put that in; it's probably the most common flaw and it's the hardest to spot for most people(most would think the frame/fork was bent).

Thanks man! I have dishing tools and a tension gauge as well. I'm going to lase them at home this weekend then true them at the bike shop I work at this week. I can true slightly warped rims and I've radial trued wheels really well. I'm super patient and am a perfectionist so hopefully it pays off with this build. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the tips!!

I’m blind!!! For real, nice wheelset for sure. I’m not a fan of the hot pink, but oil slick and chrome and those hubs...killer!!

Thanks bro! I got the hot pink because the gsport ones are limited production. I may build them with polished hubs or something. I may just hang on to them.

I thought your nipples were a little far out, just figured they weren't tensioned. How did I not notice that? laughing

Ahh dude that was smart! I kinda hate how so many BMX parts are such limited edition. So many rad colorways are one run and done.

Good move though.

didn’t think i’d like the look of the oilslick spokes, but on your bike that wheelset is sex!

(psst... your front tire is on backwards.)

Yeah I put the wheel on backwards. Lol I fixed it. I always do that when I get excited.lol Yea oil slick spokes just work for some reason. I'm thinking of building the pink with polished profile hubs oil slick spokes and chrome nipples. I think that will look sick

It's pretty easy once you understand the job of the spokes and the pattern. Truing is pretty straight forward. Almost everyone at the shop I work at can true. You can true your wheels in 10 minutes to keep em straight. Truing after lacing is the hardest part. Took me a couple hours each wheel. I'm a perfectionist lol
You should talk to someone local to teach you. It's really easy man.
