Logan Martin Wins Inaugural UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup

2016 marked the UCI’s formal introduction into freestyle BMX and (hopefully) the beginning of our path into The Olympics. It was a close race between Logan Martin and Daniel Dhers all FISE season long, but when the smog had settled in Chengdu, China, Logan was standing on top of the podium and took home the first ever UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup. We caught up with Logan to learn more about this big win, his thoughts on the tour, and his future plans.

Congrats on the big win. As far as your career goes, where does this rank amongst your accomplishments?

Thank you! It's pretty well up there with my best accomplishments. I’m so stoked to have been able to get it done.

You had some great and some not-so-great (for you, at least) placings throughout this UCI season. What do you attribute both of these to?

Going into Montpellier, I had an ankle injury and I hadn't ridden for three weeks prior. My first session back after three weeks was the first practice on the course, so I guess I didn't really go into it mentally prepared - although I didn't feel bad or sketchy on my bike either. It was just a minor mistake which caused me to slide out and that's all that needs to happen to place low. As for Denver, it was just unlucky I guess. I felt good, but got unlucky.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome to lock down the title?

The biggest obstacle was staying on my bike. I knew I could do well if I stayed on my bike, so for me, that's what I aim to do.

The race for the top spot was incredibly close and it came down to just a couple of points. What about your runs do you think helped you seal the deal?

For me, I like to do difficult, big tricks in my runs. I wouldn't be stoked on my riding if I was to do easier tricks throughout my runs to play it safe instead of the bigger tricks that I practice every other day.

This isn’t a question, but that flipwhip to invert was awesome. Thank you for doing that.

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

If you had to pick one, which FISE event of 2016 was your favorite and why?

I enjoyed China a lot! The setup was my favorite throughout the year. Besides the weather conditions, China was my favorite!

Which was your least favorite and why?

Montpellier was my least favorite because finals got called off due to rain and I wasn't really into that course. One half was good and the other half, for me, I didn't enjoy.

The UCI seems to have big plans in the works for freestyle. What does it mean to you to take home their first big award?

I'm really liking the direction FISE and UCI are heading! And, to take the UCI championship is an amazing accomplishment for me.

Does this add pressure to next year’s tour?

It's doesn't add pressure. I guess the only pressure I feel is what I put on myself. The position I'm in now is the same as I was in last year, coming off the series win in Malaysia. I do the best I can do at each event and that's all I can do.

What’s on your agenda for the rest of 2016? Any other events?

No other events left for me in 2016, so I'm stoked to finish the year off on a solid win in China.

How do you plan on spending the downtime before next year’s contest season?

I will still be putting in work in the off-season to stay on top of my game for next year.

How are you going to spend the money you made? Will you please buy me something?

For now it will go in the bank but it not sure what I will do with it. I might buy you a beer in Montpellier?

(Note: Logan doesn't drink alcohol, he's just a very generous guy.)
